SCHOLARSHIP ROUNDUP

On Islamic Law

  • In Islamic Economics and Finance in Action (Brill Academic Publishers), Shinsuke Nagaoka (Kyoto University) “provides an in-depth picture of how Islamic finance, which began as a commercial practice half a century ago, has grown globally through the trials and errors of bankers and scholars, with analyses of various controversies within the financial industry and academia (Islamic economics) and its entanglement with the capitalism that Islamic finance has confronted.” [login required]
  • In “Introducing Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Reza Nekounam's "Wisdom-Oriented Jurisprudence" (Fiqh-i Ḥikmat-Garā) to Western Academic Audiences” (Islamic Law & Law of the Muslim World eJournal), Jalil Abbasi (Bonn University) “explores the epistemological transition from mechanical reproduction to a dynamic, teleological legal realism grounded in three non-negotiable pillars: Systematic Understanding of Sharī‘a (Fahm-i Niẓām-Mand), Empirical Subject-Recognition (Mawżū‘-shināsī), Teleological Criteria-Discovery (Milāk-yābī / Tanqīḥ-i Manāṭ)."

On Islam and AI/Data Science

  • In “Beyond Automation: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Islamic Education in Higher Education” (Jurnal Ilmu Pendidikan dan Sains Islam Interdisipliner), Muhammad Hazmi Firdaus (Institut Agama Islam Hamzanwadi Pancor) analyzes “how AI is reconfiguring Islamic higher education and what this transformation means for the classical Islamic distinction between ta'lim (instruction or knowledge transfer) and ta'dib (ethical and spiritual formation)... The analysis argues that AI's value for Islamic higher education lies not in automating religious authority but in augmenting the human relationships, spiritual mentorship, and chains of transmission (isnad) that have historically anchored Islamic knowledge.”

FIELD GUIDE TO ISLAMIC LAW ONLINE: RECENT SOURCES

The Field Guide to Islamic Law Online is an ever-growing collection of links to hundreds of primary sources and archival collections around the world, online. We recently added a new resource to this list:

  • Leuven Database of Ancient Books is a database that “attempts to collect the basic information on all ancient literary texts, as opposed to documents, not only in Latin and Greek, but in all ancient languages. Cuneiform is not yet covered, nor are the Egyptian Books of the Dead. At present, it includes 17296 items, dating from the fourth century B.C. to A.D. 800 and incorporating authors from Homer (8th cent. B.C.) to Romanus Melodus and Gregorius the Great (6th cent. A.D.), including 3671 texts of which the author is unknown.”
