A Muslim Leader's Guide to Rethinking HR
6th RabiĘżal-Awwal 1448H |
Assalamu alaikum, |
There's a department in most organizations that people love to hate. Yup, I'm talking about the dreaded HR department. |
HR is often seen as the roadblock to one's career success, and the leadership team's favourite instrument for doing their dirty work: pay cuts, restructuring, and the layoffs delivered over a ten-minute Zoom call. |
But it doesn’t have to be this way. |
I've spent the last few weeks trying to answer the question: is there a better way to manage people than the standard corporate HR playbook? One built on our own Islamic worldview? |
I'm finally ready to share my answer in a new article we just published: |
Managing People as an Amanah: A Muslim Leader's Guide to Rethinking HR |
|
|
The key premise of this article is that if we manage people as an amanah instead of a 'resource', we'll manage people differently (and much more humanely). |
I walk through every stage of the employee lifecycle and ask: what does it look like to hire, onboard, pay, review, and offboard a person with amanah? |
If you're a CEO, a founder, an executive, or a manager with even three people reporting to you, please read this article. |
Umar ibn al-Khattab said that if a mule stumbled on a road in Iraq, he feared Allah would ask him why he hadn't levelled the road for it. |
If that was Umar's fear about a mule, do you think we won't be asked about the human beings we manage and how we impact their lives as managers? |
|
|
Note: This is a long read, over 8,000 words. To make it easier, I've included an audio version you can listen to on your commute, narrated by yours truly. You can find the audio player at the top of the article. |
I pray this article starts a conversation about how, as Muslim leaders, we need to decolonize our corporate environments and build a new corporate culture built on Islamic values and principles. Ameen. |
Sincerely, |
|
|
P.S. If this article lands with you, please forward it to Muslim leaders you know. Thank you! |
