SCHOLARSHIP ROUNDUP
On Islamic Law
- In “Written Evidence and Its Probative Value in Islamic Law: Forgery Cases in Eighteenth-Century Ottoman Court Records” (Journal of Law and Religion), Ali Ekber Cinar (McGill University) concludes “that the Ottoman legal practice closely reflected the reluctance of Muslim jurists to recognize the probative value of written evidence in the eighteenth century, showcasing the harmony between the theory and application of Islamic law.”
- In “A History of Female Muslim Rule in the Maldives” (Kashmir Convener), Tamanna Hazarika (Independent Scholar) details the Maldives' “long and complex history of female rulers. Although most rulers were men, several women rose to power and ruled as sultanas in Maldives. Their stories span from the 1300s to the 1700s and include bold acts of political skill and resilience.”
- In “Zaki Naguib Mahmoud’s Work Rethought Religion and Modernity” (Egyptian Streets), Nadine Tag (Journalist) describes the life of Egyptian philosopher Zaki Naguib Mahmoud. Tag argues that Mahmoud’s argument that Islam and modern science must coexist “still frames debates over religion, science and tradition across the Arab world.”
On Islam and AI/Data Science
- In “ILM: An AI-Powered Storytelling Educational Tool,” Suhaila Mohammed (McMaster University) and others “present ILM, an interactive educational platform for Stories of the Prophets that combines Arabic natural language processing, structured knowledge representation, and retrieval-based question generation.”
FIELD GUIDE TO ISLAMIC LAW ONLINE: RECENT SOURCES
The Field Guide to Islamic Law Online is an ever-growing collection of links to hundreds of primary sources and archival collections around the world, online. We recently added a new resource to this list:
- "The McGill Library's Islamic Lithographs digital collection started with a selection of sixteen Arabic lithographed books, which were physically displayed in the Islamic Studies Library between February 1st and September 30th 2014. The digitization of Islamic lithographs at McGill is now a work in progress, and this digital collection is therefore a continually updated resource. Visitors can browse the collection by country of publication or language. All books are accessible full text, either in PDF on the McGill website, or using the online reader of the Internet Archive." As of 2026, the collection includes more than 300 titles.
