A short lesson on how sleep actually works, and what it means for Fajr.
Assalamu'alaikum, |
Yesterday, we announced the new 2-hour Barakah in Sleep masterclass, taking place this Saturday insha'Allah. Today, I want to share an insight from the course that might spark your curiosity to join us. |
My biggest 'aha' moment while researching sleep was learning that sleep is not one flat block of hours. Across the night, your body moves through repeating cycles of about 90 minutes, and the two most valuable kinds of sleep are not spread evenly through those cycles. |
Deep sleep: the kind that physically repairs your body and strengthens your immune system — mostly happens in the FIRST half of the night.
Dream sleep, or REM: the kind that steadies your emotions and sharpens your mind, mostly happens in the SECOND half, towards the morning.
|
But this raises the question, if you wake for Fajr: "If I wake early for Fajr, am I losing the dream sleep my mind needs?" |
The short answer: if you don't approach your sleep properly and plan it well, then yes, you are cutting into your REM sleep. But if you structure your sleep well and add some strategic naps, you can be as fully rested and restored as someone who doesn't wake for Fajr at all (and I have the data from my own WHOOP tracker to prove it) |
There are far more details behind that answer, and it is one of the things we will walk through together in the Barakah in Sleep masterclass. Including why going back to sleep right after Fajr is a mistake, how to design your night so you protect your deep sleep, and how the prophetic midday nap fits in your busy schedule. |
If you are fascinated by sleep and want to finally learn how to master it, join me for the 2-hour Barakah in Sleep masterclass this week. It will change how you sleep for good, insha'Allah. |
