Assalamu'alaikum, |
So, something humbling happened the day after I taught the Barakah in Sleep masterclass. |
I overslept. |
I mean properly overslept. Missed my alarm, missed Fajr, and woke up past sunrise. |
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun. |
I woke up surprised. I had done everything right the day before. I slept at a reasonable bedtime. I had a proper nap earlier in the day. I cut off caffeine well before Asr, and so many of the other techniques I had just spent two hours teaching. |
And still, I overslept. |
SubhanAllah, it was a reminder of something I shared at the end of the masterclass itself: sometimes you'll do all the planning and all the science right, but ultimately, sleep is in Allah's hands. |
We do our part. We manage what we can. But we don't control sleep. |
It reminded me of a story from the seerah I love: The Prophet ï·º and a group of his Companions were travelling at night, returning from one of their journeys. As the last hours of the night came, the Companions said to one another: "We wish Allah's Messenger ï·º would let us rest a little." The Prophet ï·º heard them and replied, "I am afraid you will sleep and miss the Fajr prayer." |
And then Bilal (RA) said, "I will keep watch and wake you all up." |
So they all settled down to rest. Bilal leaned his back against his camel to keep himself upright and awake. |
And he overslept. And Prophet ï·º and the entire camp slept right through Fajr. They woke only when the edge of the sun appeared over the horizon. |
Prophet Muhammad ï·º asked Bilal what happened, and Bilal said: "I have never slept such a sleep." |
The Prophet ï·º said, calmly: |
"Allah captured your souls when He wished, and released them when He wished. O Bilal, get up and call the adhan for the prayer." (Bukhari) |
Your sleep is not yours. It belongs to the One who takes your soul each night and returns it each morning, when He wills, as He wills. |
So this is a reminder for me and for you to ‘tie our camel’ and learn about sleep, manage it well, honour it, but never feel that we own our sleep, or that we have the perfect formula to wake up on time every single day. |
That's the spirit I want you to take into the Barakah in Sleep masterclass. We covered a lot in those two hours: how to design your sleep architecture, how to manage your naps, how to reset your bioclock. If you missed the live session, the recording is still available along with the slides and additional resources to help you build your sleep around your Salah, insha'Allah. |
