ISLAMIC LAW IN THE NEWS

  • "Penang mufti Sukki Othman has advised against politicising the status of Islam in [Malaysia], saying it would only sow confusion, fear, and division in society. In dismissing claims that Islam is under threat, Sukki emphasised that Islam is the religion of the federation, as stipulated in the Federal Constitution...[and] Malay rulers serve as the head of Islam in their respective states." For more content and context on Islamic law in Malaysia, consult our Editor-in-Chief Professor Intisar Rabb's "Legislation and Regulation of Islamic Law in Malaysia" and its appended resource roundup.
  • In Bangladesh, "sharia-based loans or investments [through] conventional banks have increased at a higher rate than those of Islamic banks."
  • "Emin Serif has been sworn in as the new mufti of the northeastern city of Didymoteicho [Greece] in a ceremony at the Education Ministry in the presence of the minister, Sofia Zacharaki. Zacharaki called the event 'historic,' highlighting that the modern institutional framework for the mufti's office is now being fully implemented with transparency and in accordance with Greek law, the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne and European law."

CASES, FATWÄ€S, LEGISLATION ON ISLAMIC LAW

  • "Iranian authorities will press charges punishable by death against some individuals arrested during recent demonstrations....The office of the Tehran prosecutor said in a statement quoted by state television that an unspecified number would be charged with 'moharebeh,' or 'waging war against God.'"
  • "In the decades since Shah Bano Begum's legal fight for alimony upended India's approach to marital law, her name has become synonymous with the clash between secular statutes and religious personal law. Now, with the release of the Netflix film Haq in January 2026, the story has returned to the national spotlight."
  • "The Sultan of Selangor [Malaysia], Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has ordered state religious authorities to take firm action against any immoral activities involving what he described as deviant practices....In line with the Sultan's directive, MAIS [the Selangor Islamic Religious Council] and Selangor Mufti also expressed strong opposition to any form of activity or promotion related to LGBT practices, stating that such acts are prohibited in Islam and contradict Islamic teachings."
  • In Indonesia, "according to the revised criminal code, those caught engaging in extramarital sex can face up to one year in prison, while cohabitation before marriage can result in up to six months in prison....[T]he revised criminal code is seen as moving closer to Islamic law." Meanwhile, "some critics now argue that marriage-related offenses in the new [criminal code] contradict Islamic law."
