SCHOLARSHIP ROUNDUP

On Islamic Law

  • In Early Islamic Law in Ḥadīth Texts from Basra: The Book of Prayer and The Book of Marriage by Jābir b. Zayd (d. c. 93/712-3) (Brill), Abdulrahman al-Salmi (German University of Technology) observes that "these two authentic texts, which include Islamic law topics and ḥadīth of the Prophet, date from the last quarter of the 7th/1st century. As typical examples of the early Islamic literary style employed in writings about the Islamic jurisprudence and the way in which the isnāds and matns (transmitters and content- main bodies of the ḥadīth) are recorded, they offer present-day researchers in those fields an illustration of the way in which the ḥadīth were narrated during that period. Noteworthy, van Ess's hypothesis about these texts holds plausible accuracy and helping to traces Ibadi ancestor in Basra down to early two decades of 3rd/9th century. It shows a vertically progress of the early Islamic law schools in Iraq within the regional perspective.
  • In "Operationalising Green Sukuk within the World Bank environmental and social framework" (Discover Environment), recent PIL Senior Research Fellow Wan Mohd Zulhafiz Wan Zahari (International Islamic University Malaysia) "examines the integration of Green Sukuk—Shariah-compliant sustainable finance instruments—into the World Bank's Environmental and Social Framework (ESF). Green Sukuk have emerged as innovative vehicles for mobilising capital towards renewable energy, climate adaptation, and sustainable infrastructure, yet they currently lack formal recognition within the ESF. Drawing on doctrinal legal analysis, comparative case studies of Malaysia and Indonesia, and policy evaluation, this study argues that formal ESF recognition would elevate Green Sukuk from voluntary ethical instruments to enforceable tools within the global sustainable finance framework."

On Islam and AI/Data Science

  • In "LLM Agent-Based Modeling for Zakat Policy: Simulation in Islamic Finance" (Muslims in Machine Learning Workshop), Zaur Omarov (Lomonosov Moscow State University) and others introduce "a novel approach to simulating Zakat policy by leveraging Large Language Model (LLM) enhanced Agent-Based Modeling (ABM)...and propose a multi-agent system where LLM-powered agents represent diverse economic actors within an Islamic finance ecosystem, including Zakat payers, beneficiaries, and regulatory bodies. These agents, endowed with nuanced profiles and decision-making capabilities, interact within a simulated environment governed by Sharia principles."

FIELD GUIDE TO ISLAMIC LAW ONLINE: RECENT SOURCES

The Field Guide to Islamic Law Online is an ever-growing collection of links to hundreds of primary sources and archival collections around the world, online. We recently added a new resource to this list:

  • The Surau Sheikh Abdurrahman Collection of Sufic Texts "were digitised as part of the EAP205 Endangered Manuscript Collections of Sufi Brotherhoods in Western Sumatra project. The original manuscripts are held at the Surau Sheikh Abdurrahman in Kabupaten Lima Puluh Kota, Western Sumatra. One manuscript is a compendium of works concerned with Islamic law, mysticism, history, medicine and magic. The other is a narrative about the pilgrimage from Mecca to Egypt. The manuscripts date from the 18th and 19th centuries respectively. At the time of cataloguing, the original material within the Surau was maintained by the Sheikh Syahrani Khalil."
