  • "Leaders in Paterson, New Jersey, are pushing back against Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard's remarks over the weekend suggesting the city is working to impose Islamic law."
  • The Wisconsin Muslim Journal published an editorial on "AI And The Dajjal Consciousness: Why We Need To Value Authentic Islamic Knowledge In An Age Of Convincing Deception," which discussed "the rise of 'Sheikh GPT' and AI misguidance."
  • In Qatar, "the newly established International Islamic Bioethics Association (IIBA) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) convened its inaugural meeting, marking a significant milestone in promoting bioethical discourse within an Islamic framework."
  • "An assembly of religious scholars, leaders, and representatives from various Islamic schools of thought gathered in Karachi...under the banner of Masjlis Islamic Ulema Pakistan. The gathering was a unified call for the Pakistani government to prioritize the implementation of Shariah law in the country's legal system."
  • "Indonesian Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar highlighted the vital role of the Offices of Religious Affairs (KUA) in providing administrative, spiritual, and social services to the public."

CASES, FATWÄ€S, LEGISLATION ON ISLAMIC LAW

  • "Halal-certified establishments are allowed to display decorations for non-Muslim faiths, including Christmas, provided certain conditions are met, says [Malaysian] religious affairs minister Zulkifli Hasan....He was responding to reports that halal-certified eateries and hotels in Melaka had been barred from putting up Christmas decorations, following a circular purportedly issued by the state Islamic religious affairs department."
  • "Law enforcement officials in Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia] arrested more than 200 individuals from a male-only wellness center after authorities suspected the premises were being used for 'illicit activities' and 'promoting homosexuality.' The arrests were made under suspected violation of Section 377B of the Penal Code, a colonial era law criminalising unnatural sexual acts, and Section 29 of the Syariah Criminal Offences Act."
  • "A move by Kelantan [Malaysia] police for cases of consensual sex with underage girls to be prosecuted in shariah courts has come under fire, with two lawyers contending that such cases fall under federal jurisdiction." The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) likewise "expressed strong disapproval against plans to give Islamic religious authorities power to handle statutory rape cases, calling it a dangerous move that could undermine the supremacy of the Constitution and the rule of law." • Writing on Pakistan, lawyer Sahar Bandial argues that "nearly two decades since its rollback, our law appears to be reverting to the flawed dispensation of justice under the Zina Ordinance, 1979, that took years of activism and lobbying to challenge and correct."
  • "A significant controversy has emerged regarding Pakistan's transgender rights law, with religious and ideological groups strongly opposing it. The Transgender Act, which was implemented in 2018, was declared unlawful by the Shariah courts. However, the government appealed the decision to the Supreme Court's Shariat Appellate Bench, where the case remains under review."
  • "A newly published report by Rawadari, an Afghan human rights organization, alleges that the Ismaili Shia community in Afghanistan has faced widening and increasingly organized discrimination since the Taliban returned to power...[including] reported coercion to conform publicly to Taliban-approved Sunni practices."
