SCHOLARSHIP ROUNDUP

On Islamic Law

  • Haroon Bashir (Markfield Institute of Higher Education) discusses his new monograph, Slavery, Abolition and Islam: Debating Freedom in the Islamic Tradition (Oxford University Press), which "explores how scholars promoting abolition in the name of Islam transformed the debate around Islam and slavery."
  • In "Intellectual Property and Islamic Finance: Opportunities and Challenges for a New Islamic Intellectual Property Finance Framework" (Thunderbird International Business Review), Nadia Naim (Aston University) and Noor Suhaida Kasri (Inceif University) analyze the "intersection of Intellectual Property (IP) and Islamic finance, proposing a policy framework to integrate IP valuation into Sharia-compliant financing."
  • In "Divergent Interpretations of Section 4 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961 by the Superior Judiciary of Pakistan" (Islamic Studies), Haseeb Fatima Saikhu (independent scholar) investigates "different interpretations of Section 4 by the superior judiciary" and argues that "the judiciary needs to develop a consistent approach in constructing and applying Section 4 for clarity in the distribution of shares to grandchildren."

On Islam and AI/Data Science

  • In "Considering religious moderation in Islamic law through AI ChatGPT and Bahsul Masail of Nahdlatul Ulama" (Innovation and Technology), Nur Faizin (Universitas Negeri Malang) and others use a "qualitative-comparative approach and textual analysis" to compare responses from ChatGPT and Indonesia's Bahsul Masail to Islamic legal questions." • In "Al-Ghazali's Principle of Trust (Amanah) as a Framework for Ethical AI Governance in Organizations" (AI and Ethics), Bahar Serevan (Ibn Haldun University) argues that "incorporating Amanah, a core trait of ethical leadership from an Islamic perspective, into AI governance frameworks can effectively balance spiritual values with technological advancements."
