ISLAMIC LAW IN THE NEWS

  • In Nigeria, the Lekki Muslim Ummah observed that "Muslims are increasingly recognizing the importance of Shariah-compliant trust and inheritance planning to ensure their assets are distributed according to Islamic principles." Meanwhile, the advocacy group Muslim Rights Concern issued a statement asking the Nigerian federal government to "fully integrate Shari'ah courts into the country's judicial system."

CASES, FATWĀS, LEGISLATION ON ISLAMIC LAW

  • In Malaysia, the Melaka state government announced that it is "preparing a proposal to ban the manufacturing and sale of vape products" in line with "national guidance from the Fatwa Council and state Islamic authorities, who have declared vaping as 'haram' or forbidden under Islamic law."
  • "The Taliban's judicial authorities announced...that five individuals, including a woman, have been sentenced to 39 lashes each for offences described as 'adultery, sodomy, and illicit relations.'" In May, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan reported that "more than 180 people, including women and girls, have been flogged for the offences of adultery and practicing homosexuality during the reporting period, in public venues attended by Taliban officials." Additionally, a Human Rights Watch report noted that "since July 16, the Taliban have arrested dozens of women and girls in Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, for allegedly violating Taliban dress codes." For more content and context on the recent developments in Afghanistan, consult our Editor-in-Chief, Professor Intisar Rabb's "Resource Roundup: Afghanistan, the Taliban, and Islamic Law."
  • "The High Court [in Shah Alam, Malaysia] has dismissed a suit filed by 26-year-old twin sisters seeking to renounce Islam. Judicial Commissioner Rozi Bainon ruled that the matter falls exclusively under the jurisdiction of the Syariah Court, as it involves questions of faith, conversion, and Islamic legal status."
