SCHOLARSHIP ROUNDUP

On Islamic Law

  • In "Sustainability of Product Halal in the Postmarket Phase from the Perspective of Islamic Law in Indonesia" (Tasyri': Journal of Islamic Law 4, no. 1 (2025)),  Thalhah Thalhah and others "analyze the assurance of halal products in Indonesia, particularly within the context of Islamic law in the postmarket phase."
  • In "Comprehensive Analysis of Al-Ahkam Al-Khomsah: Islamic Law Perspective and Contemporary Implementation" (IJESSM: International Journal of Education, Social Studies, and Management 5, no. 1 (2025)), Suhaimis Suhaimis (Muhammadiyah University of West Sumatra, Indonesia) and others "present[] a comprehensive analysis of Al-Ahkam Al-Khomsah, a fundamental concept in Islamic jurisprudence that classifies actions into five legal categories: obligatory (wajib), recommended (mandub), permissible (mubah), disliked (makruh), and prohibited (haram)."
  • Wan Mohd Zulhafiz Bin Wan Zahari (International Islamic University, Malaysia; former senior research fellow at PIL) recently wrote a commentary for Berita Harian, a national newspaper in Malaysia, that comments on the recent federal court decision on Sisters in Islam, observing that "[t]he recent Federal Court decision involving Sisters in Islam Forum Malaysia (SIS Forum) has sparked renewed debate over the application of religious laws and fatwas to legal entities such as companies and non-governmental organizations."

On Islam and AI/Data Science

  • In "Navigating the Future: The Impact of AI on Islamic Economic Policy in the Digital Age" (RIEF: Review of Islamic Economics and Finance 8, no. 1 (2025)), Nispia Asya'bani and others "highlight[] the need for collaborative efforts among policymakers, Islamic financial institutions, and technology developers to address these challenges. Findings underscore that the successful implementation of AI in Islamic finance hinges on balancing technological innovation with adherence to Islamic ethical principles, paving the way for a fairer, more inclusive, and sustainable economic future."
