SCHOLARSHIP ROUNDUP

On Islamic Law

  • In "Respect for the dead under Islamic law: considerations for humanitarian forensics" (Humanitarian Law & Policy, June 19, 2025), Ahmed Al-Dawoody (ICRC) observes: "With a significant number of armed conflicts occurring in Muslim contexts, understanding how Islamic law mandates dignified treatment of the deceased is essential to ensure that forensic interventions align with cultural and legal norms."
  • In "Utilizing Qawā'id Fiqhiyyah in Legal Analysis: A Review of Their Evolution and Application in Indonesian Islamic Jurisprudence" (Istinbáth: Jurnal Hukum dan Ekonomi Islam 24, no. 1 (2025)), Ismail Jalili and Ilham Syukri (UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu, Indonesia) "examine[] the evolution of Qawā'id Fiqhiyyah (Islamic legal maxims), exploring their foundational roots in classical Islamic

jurisprudence and analyzing their adaptation and relevance in contemporary Indonesian legal and societal contexts."

On Islam and AI/Data Science

  • In "Liability Gap, Personhood Theories and Effective AI Legal Framework in the GCC Countries: Shariah as the Thread That Binds" (in Intellectual Property and Innovation (Springer 2025)), Ida Madieha Abdul Ghani Azmi and Mahyuddin Daud (International Islamic University Malaysia) argue that "[w]ith the ability of AI platforms being capable of matching humans with excellence, in addition to the astronomical resources being poured into the development of human-like sentient AI, there is a fresh call for the legal status of AI to be revisited."
