ISLAMIC LAW IN THE NEWS

  • "Professionals can lead PAS [Malaysia] as long as their decisions are guided by 'syarak' (Islamic principles), sa[id] deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man. Commenting on calls to retain ulama leadership should party president Abdul Hadi Awang step down at the party elections in September, Tuan Ibrahim said it has long been a tradition in the party: 'It doesn't necessarily have to be a ulama. What's most important is to accept the party's principles and firmly uphold core sources like the Quran and hadith. That means anyone who can extract 'nas' (religious rulings) and exercise 'ijtihad' (independent reasoning) can be a leader.'"
  • "At a high-level forum held in Kuala Lumpur on 10 June 2025 (Tuesday), YAB Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia officially launched the Centre of Excellence for Research and Innovation in Islamic Economics (i-RISE), an initiative aimed at advancing a values-based approach to economics rooted in Islamic principles."
  • "Syrian authorities . . . introduced new regulations requiring women to wear burkinis or full-body swimsuits on public beaches and in publicly accessible pools. The decree marks a major shift for post-Assad Syria, where dress standards have until now been generally liberal despite a conservative cultural context."
  • "Delivering his keynote at the Muzakarah on Human Rights Issues from the Perspective of Maqasid Syariah on Tuesday, [Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister] Fadillah said contradictions between British-influenced civil law and Islamic law were creating significant challenges in policy implementation."
  • Amid talks of "regime change" in Iran, some pundits have reminded that "[t]he founding figure of the Islamic republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, envisioned a state run by Islamic clerics and jurists who ensured all policies adhered to Islamic law."
  • In Afghanistan, "[r]eligious enforcers from the Ministry for Amr bil Maroof wa Nahi anil Munkar (the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice), working alongside local religious scholars and community elders, successfully intervened to stop two forced marriages in the Kohistan district of Faryab province."

CASES, FATWĀS, LEGISLATION ON ISLAMIC LAW

  • In Egypt, "a court ruling on May 28, 2025, declared that the 1,500-year-old St. Catherine's Monastery and its surrounding lands are 'public property' of the state, purportedly ending its historical autonomy."
  • In Malaysia, "[t]he Federal Court [is soon expected to] deliver its decision on Sisters in Islam (SIS) Forum Malaysia's appeal against a 2014 fatwa gazetted by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS), which declared the organisation deviant."
