25th Shawwal 1446H | Assalamu'alaikum, | Every time I walk to my local coffee shop, the barista, Jeff, greets me with a smile. He remembers my usual order and has mastered the perfect balance of flavors that I enjoy. | When I observe Jeff making coffee, I witness a craftsman at work that speaks of years of practice. He's not just making coffee — he's expressing his humanity through coffee. | This seemingly mundane interaction got me thinking about a much larger phenomenon reshaping our world. | For centuries, humanity has been on a quest to outsource and mechanize every aspect of our lives: | We outsourced physical labor to machines during the Industrial Revolution We delegated repetitive mental tasks to computers in the Digital Age We replaced face-to-face connections with social media And now, we're outsourcing our creative and cognitive abilities to artificial intelligence
| With each wave of technological advancement, we've gained tremendous benefits: efficiency, scale, convenience, and access. But with each gain, something subtle yet profound gets left behind. | The Missing Element: Human Soul | Have you ever received a handcrafted gift? Perhaps a piece of pottery shaped by human hands, a quilt stitched over countless hours, or a heartfelt letter written in imperfect handwriting? These items carry something beyond their physical properties — they contain fragments of the person's soul. | An AI can now generate a stunning image in seconds based on your prompt. It might be technically flawless, adhering to all the principles of composition and color theory. But does it carry the weight of human experience? The years of practice, failure, and growth? The imprint of the ruh (soul) of the artist? | But in our current climate, we're witnessing the outsourcing of arguably our most human capacities: | Analyzing complex information Creating art, music, and literature Making decisions
| We're increasingly relying on technology not just to accomplish tasks but to think for us. | This makes us grapple with profound questions: | What is our worth if our work becomes merely writing AI prompts? Who are we if AI thinks, analyzes, writes, and creates on our behalf? How do we express our human soul in this new landscape?
| While technologists, ethicists, and philosophers offer important perspectives, I believe we need to examine these questions through an Islamic lens — one that recognizes the divine origin of human capabilities and the purpose for which we were created. | Barakah in an AI World | The concept of Barakah offers a powerful framework for navigating this rapidly evolving landscape. Barakah isn't just about divine blessing — it's about the unquantifiable spiritual dimension that infuses our actions and creations when we act with sincerity, excellence (ihsan), and God-consciousness. | When we outsource too much of our thinking and creating to machines, we risk diminishing the opportunities for Barakah to flow through our efforts.
