SCHOLARSHIP ROUNDUP

On Islamic Law

  • In Islamic Law in Saudi Arabia (Leiden: Brill, 2025), Dominik Krell (Oxford University) "provides an in-depth exploration of the Saudi judiciary in the 21st century. Drawing on interviews with leading members of the Saudi judiciary, seldom-seen legal literature and court judgments, the author addresses two main questions: First, what is the Saudi jurists' understanding of an Islamic judiciary? And second, how is this understanding reflected in the Saudi legal system, its laws, its institutions, and court practices?"
  • In "Islamic Law Review Of Monopoly Practices In Modern Economics" (Islamic Law Review Of Monopoly Practices In Modern Economics 5, no. 2 (2025)), Muhammad Achyar argues that "[i]n the context of Islamic law, monopolies that harm the interests of society are considered immoral and prohibited, as they can lead to economic injustice and oppression of consumers."

On Islam and AI/Data Science

  • In "Islamic law perspectives and social experiences on stigma toward disabled people in Indonesia" (Frontiers in Sociology, March 11, 2025), Muktashim Billah (Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar, Indonesia) and others, "combining qualitative interviews with key informants and quantitative survey data from 400 respondents," find "that stigma against disabled individuals in Makassar is deeply embedded in social structures, often reinforcing their marginalization. While Islamic teachings promote inclusivity and protection of dignity, cultural misinterpretations and lack of awareness contribute to inconsistent application."

FIELD GUIDE TO ISLAMIC LAW ONLINE: RECENT SOURCES

The Field Guide to Islamic Law Online is an ever-growing collection of links to hundreds of primary sources and archival collections around the world, online. We recently added a new resource to this list:

  • Leuven Database of Ancient Books is a database that "attempts to collect the basic information on all ancient literary texts, as opposed to documents, not only in Latin and Greek, but in all ancient languages. Cuneiform is not yet covered, nor are the Egyptian Books of the Dead. At present, it includes 17296 items, dating from the fourth century B.C. to A.D. 800 and incorporating authors from Homer (8th cent. B.C.) to Romanus Melodus and Gregorius the Great (6th cent. A.D.), including 3671 texts of which the author is unknown."
