SCHOLARSHIP ROUNDUP

On Islamic Law

  • In "This Muslim scholar wants to revive the 'Judeo-Islamic tradition,' starting with Moses" (Times of Israel, March 11, 2025), Zack Rothbart reviews Mustafa Akyol's (Cato Institute) The Islamic Moses, noting that Akyol "turns to the Quran's focus on a shared prophet to highlight a historic closeness and foster interfaith relations."
  • In "The IVF Exception: Strengthening Free Exercise Challenges to Abortion Bans" (UC Law Constitutional Quarterly 52, no. 3 (2025)), Io Jones (University of Virginia School of Law) notes that "[i]n September 2022, a group of Jewish and Muslim plaintiffs challenged Indiana's state abortion ban, arguing that the ban infringes on religious freedom [for Muslims, in line with their adherence to sharīʿa norms permitting abortion in limited instances] that is protected by the state's Religious Freedom Restoration Act."

On Islam and AI/Data Science

  • In "Considering religious moderation in Islamic law through AI ChatGPT and Bahsul Masail of Nahdlatul Ulama" (Law, Innovation & Technology, February 27, 2025), Nur Faizin (Universitas Negeri Malang, Indonesia) and others find, "[u]sing a qualitative-comparative approach and textual analysis," "that the responses of the AI, ChatGPT version 3.5, do not indicate answers that lead to intolerant or radical actions regarding Islamic attitudes and law."
