- Mahmood Kooria (The University of Edinburgh) was recently interviewed by Outlook India in a conversation that touched on the scholar's academic trajectory, Islamic legal history in South Asia, and the transformation of the concept of jihād, among others.
- Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi (Swansea University) was recently interviewed by the Middle East Forum, discussing the feasibility of implementing Islamic law in contemporary Syria, as well as the situation of non-Sunni Muslims and non-Muslims in the country. The conversation delved into the legal, social, and political dynamics shaping religious minorities' status in a post-conflict Syria.
- In "Acehnese women: Crucial role in peacebuilding overlooked, discriminated by local regulations" (The Conversation, December 23, 2024), Suraiya Kamaruzzaman (Dosen Fakultas Teknik / Kepala Pusat Riset Perubahan Iklim USK, Universitas Syiah Kuala) argues that, in Aceh, Indonesia, "[r]egulations ostensibly implemented under Islamic law often restrict women's freedoms. For example, West Aceh's 2010 regulation requires women to wear skirts, prohibiting the use of trousers despite their roots in traditional Aceh's attire. Women become subjects of public inspection, and violations ends with them not receiving public services that should be open for any citizens." Consult the original 2010 regulation for more content and context.
On Islam and Data Science - In "Asset-Based Microfinance for Microenterprises: Evidence from Pakistan" (American Economic Review 114, no. 2 (2024)) Faisal Bari (Lahore University of Management Sciences) and others examine the integration of Islamic law-compliant microfinance practices in Pakistan, focusing on how Islamic finance principles, such as profit-sharing and interest-free loans, impact the economic activities of microenterprises in low-income communities.
- In "Microequity: Some Thoughts for an Emerging Research Agenda" (Oxford Review of Economic Policy 40 (2024)), Muhammad Meki (Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies) and Simon Quinn (Imperial College Business School, UK) explore the potential of microequity as a tool for economic empowerment, emphasizing its alignment with Islamic finance principles, particularly equity-based financing, as an alternative to interest-based lending. It discusses the ethical and practical implications of applying Islamic law in microfinance models to support small-scale entrepreneurship.
FIELD GUIDE TO ISLAMIC LAW ONLINE: RECENT SOURCES The Field Guide to Islamic Law Online is an ever-growing collection of links to hundreds of primary sources and archival collections around the world, online. We recently added a new resource to this list: - Ahangar was a Persian-language magazine that focused on literature, culture, and intellectual discourse. It addressed both contemporary and historical issues through essays, poetry, and critical commentary. The publication explored themes of social, political, and cultural relevance, aiming to bridge traditional and modern perspectives. It became an important platform for writers and thinkers in the Persian-speaking world but was eventually discontinued after contributing significantly to intellectual and cultural debates in its time.
