- In "Minister vs. Mufti the struggle over 'moderate Islam' in wartime Syria (2011–2021)" (Mediterranean Politics, August 22, 2024), Thomas Pierret (Aix Marseille Université, CNRS, IREMAM, Aix-en-Provence, France) explores competing interpretations of Islamic law in the context of the recent conflict in Syria, arguing that "'moderate Islam' had become the focus of competing definitions by conservatives, who equated it with traditional Sunni doctrines, and modernists, who advocated innovative interpretations of the Scriptures and further secularization of law and education."
- In "Conservative Muslims in Indonesia's religious and political landscapes: Ahok's blasphemy case as a political leverage" (Cogent Social Sciences 10, no. 1 (2024)), Imam Yahya (Universitas Islam Negeri Walisongo, Semarang, Indonesia) and Sulistiyono Susilo (Institute of Social Sciences and Cultural Studies, Yogyakarta, Indonesia) analyze the "blasphemy fatwa case involving the former Jakarta Governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok)," concluding that " this fatwa deviates from the traditional approach of [the Indonesia Ulema Council], which primarily emphasizes the strengthening of Islamic law with a focus on adherence to Islamic norms."
