  • In "The Formative and Classical Administration of Islamic Criminal Justice Revisited: A Historiographical Analysis" (History Compass), former Program in Islamic Law Fellow Mohammed Allehbi (Oxford Center for Islamic Studies) explores the historiography of "alternative sources on [the] administration of criminal justice: Egyptian papyri, administrative manuals and investiture diplomas, nawāzil (legal responses and rulings for new cases), Cairo Geniza, and criminal reports found in historical chronicles" in order to "propose new methodological pathways for future research in this field."   • In "Cleanliness is Next to Godliness: Can Money Laundering be Sharia-Compliant?" (Journal of Financial Crime), Abdulrazak Alenazi (American University of Sharjah) and others "create a conceptual framework for the Islamic perspective on money-laundering (ML) activities." [login required]
  • In "A Theory of Religious Sovereignty: Private Law Disputes and State-Religion Relations in Bangladesh and Pakistan" (PhD dissertation), Syed Muhammad Faisal Kamal (University of Toronto) "examines how private law disputes in Bangladesh and Pakistan have served as sites for the conceptualization of state-religion relations."

FIELD GUIDE TO ISLAMIC LAW ONLINE: RECENT SOURCES

The Field Guide to Islamic Law Online is an ever-growing collection of links to hundreds of primary sources and archival collections around the world, online. We recently added a new resource to this list:

  • IRCICA Farabi Digital Library contains "copies of the Holy Quran, calligraphic works, maps, yearbooks, periodicals, early printed books and historical photographs," including "chronicles that list historical events by title and date, original sources on the history of the Muslim world, palace records such as calendars and war reports, complete sets of newspapers and journals...[and over] 70,000 photographs."
