- The Arab Weekly reported that "Egypt's official religious bodies, long accustomed to acting as gatekeepers on everything from marriage to finance, are now facing competition from tools that deliver instant answers, often accompanied by citations from classical sources." Egypt's Dār al-Iftā' announced that its 10th international Conference, "The Making of the Competent Mufti in the Age of Artificial Intelligence," will "lay down clear foundations for training a discerning mufti—one who can engage with digital transformations and responsibly employ AI tools to serve the fatwa process while upholding Islamic principles." Ahead of the conference, Dār al-Iftā' issued a statement on the "e-fatwa in the AI age," noting that its FatwaPro platform "has handled 6,740 fatwas [since 2022], with 3,470 issued in 2024 alone. The platform now averages up to fifteen inquiries per day, predominantly in English and French."
CASES, FATWĀS, LEGISLATION ON ISLAMIC LAW - In June, a Human Rights Watch report argued that "Pakistan's blasphemy laws perpetuate religious discrimination and are used to target the poor and minorities in unlawful evictions and land grabs." Last week, the Islamabad High Court "directed the government to launch a probe into the increasing number of online blasphemy cases, particularly involving young individuals. ...Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, presiding over the case, ordered that a commission be formed within the next 30 days to investigate the issue."
- "Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, sentenced to death in Yemen for the 2017 murder of Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mehdi, has received a temporary reprieve from execution. However, her future remains uncertain, with the victim's family firmly rejecting any possibility of a pardon and demanding 'Qisas'—retribution under Islamic law." "While there is no official confirmation on what led to the [stay of execution]...the Grand Mufti of India [was] credited for leading negotiations that brought some relief for Nimisha and her family."
- "A former massage therapist who claimed to possess supernatural powers and taught followers controversial beliefs—including justifying gambling and spiritual marriages—has been sentenced to four months' jail in Singapore for promoting a doctrine deemed contrary to Islamic law."
- The East Plano Islamic Center filed suit against the Texas Funeral Service Commission (TFSC) "for the right to perform services after the commission ordered the mosque to stop them earlier this year. ...Since TFSC sent [a cease and desist] letter, 11 congregants have died without receiving funeral rites at their home mosque, EPIC alleges. Islamic law requires prompt burial, ideally within 24 hours."
